Arts and Crafts Director

JOB DESCRIPTION: Summary:
Community: Camp Marshall is a community experience where all staff are with each other for an entire summer. Each week the staff will see a new group of campers while concurrently a deeper community will form among the staff. While each staff person has a role or specialty area such as Arts and Crafts Director, the larger role is one of everyone doing their part by living in community. It is that “intentionality of life together” where you might find yourself helping in the kitchen, campfire, evening programming.

The Arts & Crafts Director will organize and facilitate opportunities for campers to work in a variety of mediums and will encourage campers to experiment by using art to respond to scripture and experience at camp. The Arts and Crafts Director will provide guidance for campers with a focus on teaching a progression of art skills.

Understanding: Cultivating an understanding of “ability” with staff and campers in art and craft skills. An awareness of skills, along with the sensitivity to be careful with a potentially new artist.

Projects must be reasonable in size and scope so that they will be completed before heading home.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Planning & Preparation: During Staff Training you will learn:
1. Goals and objectives of Camp Marshall, the Camp Commission and program design.
2. Learn American Camp Association (ACA) standards that relate to the Arts and Crafts work at camp.
3. Summer program weeks and program design.
4. Begin developing a vision for the delivery of an arts and crafts program that is age appropriate and allows for participation at different skill levels. *Over the course of the summer we will be working with children and families. Class sizes may range from 12 – 20 people. (Adult staff will be working with you)
5. Become familiar with Camp Marshall’s web platform. The ability to create content, write blogs, post social posts to share Artwork is essential.
6. Inventory: Become familiar with inventory in Arts and Crafts, develop a list and items needed. Orders will be coordinated by the Executive Director or his designee.

Staff Training
1. Successful completion of staff training: This includes being certified in First Aid/CPR, AED card. (This can be obtained during staff training)
2. Inventory skills of other staff: Spend time with all the staff and learn what “arts and crafts” skills they have. It is quite possible there will be others on staff who have the skills to lead an activity.
3. Visioning: Work with Executive Director/ Summer Program Director to develop a vision for projects/materials we will be creating during the summer.
a. Collaborate with the Executive Director and Summer Program Director and other camp staff to create at least one project that tells a story of God’s work in Camp Marshall’s community of campers and staff. This might look like a “Shutterfly book,” or Art project.
4. Training Peers: During the second week of staff training teach counseling/program staff what you will be doing at Arts and Crafts with an eye towards how staff are to work in the area during program delivery to include, but not limited to: Cultivating conversations with campers around artistic expression, supporting the classroom environment, feedback to campers as they are working, how to clean up the class space at the end of every session.

Specific Responsibilities during program weeks:

Arts and Crafts Program Area:
1. Work with the “summer clergy or deans” and become familiar with scriptures they will be referencing as resource material for art and craft projects.
a. Find out what supplies / support clergy will need for Christian Formation. *This is in addition to the normal program hours.
2. Develop and implement an Arts/Crafts program suitable for children (and parents) attending the various camps.
3. Work closely with the Media Director, whenever possible, to scan/photograph Art and Crafts projects to be shared on social media, newsletters and as resource material for the weekly slideshow.
4. Develop a weekly schedule of starting and finishing dates for arts and crafts projects.
a. Plan for and lead two program times each day (10 – 12 noon, 2 – 4:30); and be able to assist with Christian Formation/Chapel as needed.
5. Help lead Day Camp in July and August.
6. Ensure that the Arts and Crafts area is thoroughly cleaned, and all supplies are properly inventoried and packed away during camp season and before camp closes.

General Summer Program:
1. Assist the Program Director with weekly tasks (when requested) such as crafting a weekly schedule with program rotations, cabin assignments.
2. Oversee and evaluate counseling staff assigned to you.
3. Be available to assist staff with camper discipline issues, illness, or injury, preparation for all camp events such as chapel, talent show, campfire, and waterfront night.

Minimum Skills:
Must have the ability to help students “progress” through skills in different media. The examples listed below are just four expressions common to camp. This would include making samples of the skills being taught so students can “see” what is going to be taught.

1. Be comfortable in the out of doors: The “Arts and Crafts” space is “outdoors” between our dining hall and the lake. This “classroom” can go anywhere on camp and Wildhorse Island as part of a larger trip.
2. Inspiration: The ability to work with Christian Formation / lessons being taught in the summer sessions / or help students find inspiration from scripture for creating an artistic response.
3. Drawing: The ability to teach basic drawing techniques; examples include the ability to recognize edges, understand proportion, perspective of drawing, distinct color schemes and putting the thought together.
4. Watercolor: Knowing and teaching the four basic watercolor techniques; Wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, dry-on-dry, and dry-on-wet.
5. Friendship Bracelets: Be familiar with friendship bracelets and how to teach several different weaving styles.
6. Tie-dying: Be familiar with teaching Tie-dye; *If you have no experience with this craft consider another art form or craft. Tie-Dye requires attention to safety, careful supervision, and a great deal of work before and after class time. While popular – it is also very labor intensive.

4. Experience developing lesson plans.
5. Ability to work with little or no supervision. Self-motivated.
6. Current certifications in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Challenge Course or willingness to obtain during staff training.
7. Food Handlers Permit and Safe Church training or willingness to obtain during staff training.
8. Be over 19 years of age during the summer camp season for which you are applying.

2. Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering camp programs in a rustic facility, operate with daily exposure to varying weather conditions.
3. Willingness to participate in Day Camps that are held in various parts of the Dioceses of Montana, live in housing provided by local congregations, and adapt to the day camp schedules when on the road.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
